A hair transplant marks the beginning of a hair restoration process, but it's only the first step. To maximize the results of the procedure and ensure harmonious regrowth, it's essential to carefully follow post-operative advice. In this article, discover the key stages of recovery, week by week, as well as the best practices to adopt to maintain your new hair.

Immediately after the transplant: the first steps are crucial

The first 10-15 days following an FUE or FUT hair transplant are crucial. During this period, the grafts are still fragile and must be protected:

  • Avoid any friction, especially with the pillow. It is recommended to sleep in an elevated position.
  • Do not touch the grafted area, even if it itches. Scab formation is normal.
  • The first cleaning must be carried out the day after the procedure, according to a very precise protocol provided by your hair surgeon.

Day 10 to 15

The scabs formed on the grafted area begin to fall off naturally, a sign that healing is progressing well. It is important not to scratch or remove them manually to avoid disrupting the grafts' attachment. At this stage, cleaning at the clinic is often appreciated. It is also common to observe the loss of transplanted hair: this temporary phenomenon, called " post-graft telogen effluvium ," is perfectly normal and precedes the regrowth phase.

Day 15 to 20

At this stage, the scalp gradually returns to its original appearance. Redness gradually fades, although it may persist in some people with sensitive skin. It is possible to resume a gentle hair care routine, following the surgeon's instructions, particularly regarding washing.

After 1 month

The transplanted hair shafts continue to fall out. The follicles enter a resting phase, during which no hair grows yet. This does not indicate graft failure, but simply a normal stage of the hair cycle. Visible regrowth will not begin until a few weeks later, with the gradual appearance of fine, light-colored hair.

Post-operative advice to promote regrowth

Adopting the right actions promotes the health of your grafts in the long term:

  • Wash your hair gently: Use a mild shampoo recommended by your doctor.
  • Avoid intensive sports, sun exposure for 3 months, or wearing helmets for 1 month.
  • Eat a balanced diet, rich in B vitamins, iron and zinc.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco, which slow down skin microcirculation.

Complementary solutions like PRP hair injections can accelerate regrowth and strengthen follicles.

Before and after: when can you see the results of a hair transplant?

The results of a hair transplant are not immediate. After the procedure, the transplanted follicles must be given time to establish themselves, go through a resting phase, and then gradually stimulate regrowth.

This process follows a natural hair cycle and may vary slightly from patient to patient. Here is a typical timeline to visualize the evolution of before-and-after results:

  • At 3-4 months : The first hairs begin to grow back. They are often fine, fragile, and sparse. This is a normal and encouraging stage that marks the grafts' growth.
  • At 6 months : 50 to 70% of the expected result can be observed. Hair gains in thickness and quantity. The hairline begins to become more defined and density becomes more visible, especially in patients who have strictly followed the post-operative advice.
  • At 12 months : The final result is generally achieved. The hair is fully developed, thicker, darker, and perfectly integrated into the scalp. It can be styled, cut, and maintained like natural hair, without restrictions.

For cases of advanced baldness or extensive grafts, progression can continue for up to 15 months, particularly in the crown areas (also called “vertex”).
